Reasons That Set Us Apart!

Our Before & After Images

How to prepare and protect your home during floor sanding

Gone are the days when floor sanding meant dealing with clouds of sawdust. With modern dust-free floor sanding equipment, the process is now virtually 100% dust-free which is good news for your home. However, there are still some simple measures you’ll need to prepare and protect your interiors for a flawless finish.

Clear the area

Whether it’s furniture, curtains or books, anything that acts as a dust collector needs to be removed from the room you’ll be sanding. If a piece of furniture is too heavy to remove completely, you’ll need to seal it completely with a polythene dust sheet and move from one side of the room to the other when you come to sand the floor.

Seal it off

It’s not just your heavy furniture that needs wrapping. You’ll need to make sure you seal any doorways and protect the walls if necessary by taping polythene dust sheets in place. Don’t forget your plug sockets – as they’re at floor level they can accumulate dust from procedures like corner sanding that will leave particles in the air – so tape them off individually.

Tape it up

If you can remove your skirting board easily, this will protect it from damage and allow you to sand right to the edge of the room. Otherwise, tape off skirting boards, doors, doorframes and fireplaces with masking tape to protect them from dents and scratches during the sanding process, and splashes of colour during staining and finishing. Use an ultra low-tack tape that won’t be affected by the finishing process – some tapes can end up leaving a sticky residue when removed.

Mind the gap

If you have significant gaps in your floorboards, it makes sense to fill them either with a paste of wood filler and sawdust or with thin strips of MDF. There are various ways you can go about the process, even using weatherproofing strips or decorator’s caulk. What’s important is that you both block out any draughts for better energy efficiency and leave a perfectly smooth surface – any lumps or bumps will trap dirt and wear more quickly than other parts of the floor.

Early warning

Floor sanding can be a noisy and messy process. Invite your neighbours round and give them a heads up on when you’re going to start work on your floors. That way, you’ll head off any complaints and be free to get the job done as quickly as possible.
